Research

At Firsway Health Centre we all have a keen interest and are actively involved in research to help improve medical knowledge about illness and so develop better treatments for patients. We work closely with the National Institute for Health Research Greater Manchester Clinical Research Network to get involved in studies that are ethically approved and selected specially for primary care to help improve medical care now and in the future.  As a patient, you may be invited to take part in research. There is no obligation to take part and if you decline it will not affect your treatment in any way.  We take your rights to have your personal data protected very seriously and do not release any patient identifiable data without your consent. If you have any questions about our involvement in research or would like any more information, please contact Paula Lea at the practice.

We have participated in a number of studies recently, including:

  • The Salford Lung Study programme – a ‘real world’ study of patients with Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • a new type of ECG device that is less intrusive for patients and is faster to use
  • a study into the use of a particular drug versus a placebo in patients with Depression
  • a study to ascertain the effect of a personal letter and cancer awareness leaflet on primary care consultations among patients who are at risk of late presentation of Cancer

We are about to engage in two exciting new studies in the areas of Diabetes and COPD. If you are eligible to take part in the studies, you will be invited to consider this in the coming months.  In the meantime, there are two important projects being undertaken at the moment – please take a moment to have a look at the information below:

Join Dementia Research (JDR)

This is a national project aiming to improve dementia care by increasing the number of people involved in dementia research. People of any health and age are welcome to sign up.  Would you like to join the fight against dementia? Follow this link to sign up today.

Research for the Future

Research for the Future is a NHS-supported project to encourage people living in and around Greater Manchester to take part in local health research opportunities. Research for the Future consists of a series of ‘Help BEAT’ campaigns.  Each ‘Help BEAT’ campaign (Diabetes, Heart Disease and Respiratory Disease) invites people with a particular health condition to hear more about research going on into that condition.
